Feedback - Miss Spencer

Target audience feedback - You need to do some research to back up any points you make. Go the the BFI statistical yearbook and research the genre and which audiences prefer it. this is only at a level 1 at the moment.

Genre research feedback - You have gone into a lot of detail about the conventions of the genre. You have also thought about the sub-genres etc. I would like to see a look at the history of the genre incorporated. At the moment this is a level 2. The changes above would take it into a level 3.

Task 3 - Target Audience Research

horror target audience

the main target audience the produce would arming to appear to would be males between the ages for 15-25 and this is because some people think that stereo typically men are less scared then females when it comes to horror films. These armed at men because they are less likely to be scared.

then if you look at it from higher-upper class, upper class,upper-middle clase, lower-middle class and lower class they would be arming for the higher class and the middle cloasses because they have the morning to pay for it but the would mainly be aiming it at middle class people because the have the biggest target audience and this is because these are people that aren't classed as wealthy or poor they are normal people.

they would be arming this at 15-25 year olds because this sort of film is what interests them also they don't have to pay bills and things like that so they have the money to go to the cinema and pay for the ticket.

the stereotypical social group that would come to watch this film would be goths and emos because they come across as dark and scary, this comes across as the same as there personality they can also associate with them because it is dark and depressing also death.

when looking at the life matrix the class you would look at would be fun/atics, this is because they are fun-seeking and active young people and hard driving an this is because they want to show people they wont be scared also they want to show they are not scared.

Task 2.2 Genre Research - Horror

Genre research
A horror film is a film that a negative feel to the film also a feel that the person that is watching it should be scared and they should feel a lone. these types of films should look in to the persons watching it they negative emotions.  there are aspects of other genre in horror such as thriller or supernatural or fantasy.
History of Horror films:
from 1898 to now horror has changed a lot, from the colour of the film was back the in black and white and now it is in colour. a thing that has stayed the same is that there are still set in shacks and sceary houses and this hasnt changed over the years.

Sub-Genres of Horror:
There are a lot of types of horror film such as a romantic horror, comedy horror , action horror, thriller horror  and adventure horror.

Codes and conventions of Psychological Horror:

in a horror film there should be
fast paced sortieing and

resedent evil - action horror

insidious

scream4

this film has conventions of horror such as the lighting because they are dark and scary and this is a convention of horror because it hids people and things because this creates negative feeling and this is what a horror film is and this is because it needs to make people feel scared and a lone and make them feel like they need to watch on to see if something good happens.

another convention of horror is that there is a lot of close ups and and not many shots run for long periods of time and this is because there is a lot happening in one seance and they need to get a lot of information in and doing these not very long shots makes the watcher see what is happening.

another convention of horror is that the music creates the feeling of the film and the msuic they use is scary and load and screechy music witch makes people think and feel a lone and scared, this also is used to make you feel in the film and this is a good thing because it makes them more scared and the films looks more realistic.

another convention of horror is that the start of the film is that you have long lasting shots to build up tense and this can put the watcher on edge and also you need to get short snappy shots to get all of the content into the film and this also creates the effect that a lot is happening to that person.

another effect that should be used a a lot in a horror film is a fade and this is because it gives the effect if the lights being turned off and that is good in a horror because people don't really understand that dark and there for they will be scared. also this creates the effect that something will happen in the next scene.

another shot that is a convention of horror is a point of view shot and this is because it makes people think they are on the film and this taps into the watchers mind and makes them even more scared then they already are. there should be more high and low angle shots and this is because it looks like the charectore is being watched and this is good in a horror because people will be more scared.

Task 2.1 Seven - Thriller Analysis

seven
this is a thriller film and the conventions of thrill is that it makes you jump and gives you a feel of excitement and this can be linked to the lighting because if it is dark and you cant see what Will happen next then you will want to know and you will watch on, even though you are scared. this is closely linked with the conventions of horror this is because in a horror film the lighting is dark, the same as thriller but instead of giving the feel of excitement, it gives the feel of scared a lone and also lost.

at the start of this film there is a lot of conventions of thriller such as there is dark lighting and this shows that then is mastery behind this film also this creates the feeling of fear and people being scared. this is good because it sets up the watcher to be scared and for them to jump out of there seat. this also gets them thinking about the mystery behind this film. the lighting of this film works well with the editing, this is because there is a book and it is blued just like this film you need to try and get your head around this opening because it is dark and scary. this leads to the watcher wanting to keep watching and to keep being interested.

in the next frame it is just a black background, this makes the reader think what should be on there? what will come next and this is  convention so horror, this is also linked in with the fact that the writing is white and this stands out on the black background and this really shows off the words. also
the words are fuzzing and been edited to shows the scariness of this film and the mystery behind this film

the music in this film is screechy and really loud music to over people the person and to make them think what is going on to confuse them, also this music is scary and really mysteries and this allows the person that is watching this to decide what they want to do with this film. this music is being played over pictures being flashed in and out, and these pictures are very disgusting and grouse and this is a convention of horror and thriller, this is because it dark and scary and makes them think what is going on. there is a picture of blood and this is a convention of thriller because it gives a sense of mystery behind who's blood it is and also it makes people think what has happened? or what will happen. this is all linked because even though this is blood it is still dark and scary.

this is a picture of a disgusting picture and this is a conversion of  horror because it make you feel sick and scared and disgusted for what they see and this is a good because it lets them see that this film will have a element of blood and goer about it and the fact that this is a picture makes you think that someone is planing to do something bad to this person.this is a close up and they have done this to show that this is real and that is really going to happen, this has also been done to show the detail of this picture.

then towards the end of the opening scene there is a picture of a book again and this is a convention of horror because is symbolises that when someone dies they will kill again, and the again and again tell they are cough. there is white writing in this frame because you can see it better then on a light background because you can see it better.

Feedback - Miss Spencer

You have made a start to your analysis Ashley, and have made some good points throughout your analysis. You have thought about conventions, comparing horror to rom com, but I would like some more specific examples with screen shots to illustrate this. At the moment you are in a level 2, but in order to improve you need to:
  • Think about the DISTINCT formula we discussed in the horror conventions lesson and apply this to all of your analysis.
  • Embed the film opening at the top of each analysis
  • upload screen shots of relevant shots throughout your work
  • Blogger doesn't automatically spell check your work, but it does have a spell check icon. Can you ensure you check all of your work as this is taken into account when assessing your work.
  • You should have four pieces of analysis by now, I am running a catch up day in half term so will invite you to this to support you catching up after starting the course late.

Task 2.1 - Blue Velvet Analysis - Horror/Thriller

Blue Velvet

At the start of the film there is a dark blue background be used this is to show that this film will be dark and bloody and scary, this was with white colours on it to show of the writing to really show off who made this film and this shows that the people in this film have done a good job and they have done well. In this opening the music is scary with charms witch creates a scary feel to the opening to the film and this is convention if a horror because the music that is on when a film is being played creates  the feel of the film and the music being played is a convention of a horror.

In the opening scene there is a typical happy white picket fence and this creates a happy and perfect feel to the film and this is a false sense of security and this is be used in this horror and also a convention of a horror fill house is a topical 50s house and this white picket fence is a convention of horror is this also perfect and it gives a false senesce of security and there is also a red rose in this fame and a rose represent love and happiness and this shows this film what be what you think , because we know this is a horror film and this beings out the other side if a rose witch is prickly.

The sound in this part if the film is mellow and easy listening and this dramatic irony and  this got the watcher to feel safe and feel happy and as the film goes on the film will get more and more scared.

In the next frame there is a fire engine and this shows this place is safe and perfect and there life is really good and happy and this lays the effect this town is really safe and nothing happens here, also this is set in the 1950s and we know this from the fire engine it is from the 50s also we can say that because the man is hanging off the step on the fire engine this is not safe and you wouldn't see that now, this shows that something bad could happen in this film bad because they are going on the edge.

in this next frame there is a close of the film is a tulip and this is a happy plant and this is peaceful and this is in front of this perfect white picket fence

Prelimary Task

the first shot is a wide shot so we can get to see the main charter, then we move into a close up to see that he is doing witch is on the phone, the way i would change this now is i would have put a transition in between the sequence to show my wide skill set. Then i go into a medium shot but what i would have done to do better, would be to make the shot longer so it gives me more time to edit it.what i did well was  added a transition to show the call being in two difference places.though the hole start of this scene we did not brake the 180 degree rule, i also move from shot to shot with close ups and media close ups.then i used a wide shot to show this small character in this massive building to show how long it will take to find the bomb but then i moved into a close up , so you can see him running into the building.then what else i did well was use a high angle shot to use a lot of different type of shots. Then i used a different type of transition, to show versatilaty in what i can use on a premier pro.the i used the green scene effect to use a explosion.

Task 2.1 - Insidious - Horror Analysis

Insidious: chapter 2

This film is a horror film and the elements of a horror film are that they have music and sound that builds up tension also if the lighting is very dark so it creates the effected that they don’t know what is there and this is linked with when kids are younger they are scared of the dark and this is because they don’t understand it and when you are watching a horror film you need to not understand what is happening so you are scared just like what happens in this film. This compered to a thriller is that a romantic comedy would be that people in a romantic comedy want to be happy and the lights are light and not dark because they want the person that is watching It to be happy and to feel happy for the couple.

The lighting at the start of the filmis very dark and scary this is to sence the fact this film will be very scary also this is to lead to watch to think what has happen?

When you look at his fastional exsprestion it leads us into a false sence of secuaty because he has a shocked face and this makes us think he hasn’t done anything wrong but when we know he did kill her and this makes the watcher think what has happened to him.

The sound in this part of the film Is loud and messing music and this is to lead the watcher that something is about to happen

In this screen you canse there is still a dark room witch adds mistory to the film and makes you think what is happening? On the ther hand there is a police officer to show safty and this can lead to the watcher getting even more scared.

Task 2.1 - The Holiday - Rom Com Analysis

The holiday

the holiday is a romantic  comedy and this is different to a horror film because in a romantic comedy the lighting is really loud and bright and this is because to create a positive atmosphere but in a horror the lighting is dark and scary. In this the music is very happy and joyful to make the watcher happy and to make them see that this is a happy film and in comparison to the a horror film where the music is scary and really loud. Mise-en-scene in a romantic comedy is happy things like flowers and nice paintings. The cast are happy and they play there holes happier.

at the start of the scene there I the makers and this is universal studios and this shows that this film will be very successful and this is because they don't normally make and produce film unless it is good.

there is very solving music being played over the picture and the music is very relaxing and it is very happy and this is very happy music and this is used because it is to make the watcher feel really happy and to make them see what this film is about, to let them see that this film is going to be really happy and this sets up the gurneys, this is because they want the watcher to feel happy for them before the film even starts. the text on the screen is white and this is because it is the colour for pure and this is used to show the people in this film are going to be pure and they are going to love each other and there love will be pure.  the white also going with the grass background to let it stand out,

when we first meet the characters they are kissing very passionately and this sets up for a romantic comedy and this is good for the watcher and this is because this gets the watcher thinking, what will happen and this is good because the watcher will be hooked on the film and they want to know what happened and who are they and what happened to them, this sets up to hole story. this is a close up shot and this is good because it shows they are close and they are in love and this kiss means something to them , they really love each other.

then there is a medium stop to show that there is a cute background and to show where they are going to be when this cute scene takes place and though out this hole start of the film he is holding here and this shows there connection and this shows that these two means allot each other.

but then you find out when the camera zoom out it is a video so this shows that this hole idea of love is fake and that no one et love and no one get you happy and this is bad because it shows the watcher everything they thought about the film was good but we know now it is bad.

Preliminary Task - Evaluation

start: at the start of the movie we have the camera on a wide shot and the camera still and that is what you need when filming unless you are doing 1st persons shot.then we go into  a close up and we chose to this to create a contrast of shots. we also never broke the 180 degrees rule. and again we have kept the camera still. one of the skills i learnt from doing this was the effect to use transitions to go from one place to the next, if i did it again i would have put more then one shot on one page to crate the effect the calls where going on at the same time. my times as the convocations went from shot to shot was good, i felt this was quite difficult because the clip the speech where so close together i had to time the cut perfectly.

i felt what i did though out was a wide range of shots such as: close ups, extreme closeups, high angle shots, long shots and this create a large contrast in the movie, this also meant that non of my shots where too long.

what I found different at some times that the shots where to long so what i had to do was use closeups to create the feeling that time was moving forward and this meant that the films was shorter the it was arigenly.

what i thought i did well was at the end i used the green screen well, and this lead to me to use a better exp lotion.
